North Park derives its name from a lemon grove established in the late 1800s. As the neighborhoods around the property grew the grove was eventually converted into housing although North Park stuck as the title. In the early days of Uptown San Diego living water was hard to come by. The owner of the lemon grove discovered this the hard way. Later in history the community kept from drying out with the help of a water tower which today is a landmark.

The North Park Water Tower at the corner of Howard and Idaho Streets was built in 1910 to supply water to the growing community. Some other Historical sites to check out in North Park are the Lafayette Hotel and Georgia Street Bridge over University Avenue. One of the best ways to visit these sites is on foot. You may notice that most people in North Park choose to get around by foot or bicycle. This is just one reflection of North Park’s relaxed urban atmosphere.
