Coronado is often referred to as an Island, but did you know that it can be reached by land? One famous entry way to this beautiful resort town is via the Coronado Bay Bridge starting near Downtown. If you’re in South County head north along Silver Strand Boulevard from Imperial Beach. The harbor ferry from Downtown San Diego is also a popular way to reach the island for those on foot or bike.

With a split personality between resort town and powerful Navel fortress it is safe to say that no time in San Diego is complete without a visit to Coronado. The history of Coronado reveals how the Island became one of San Diego’s most desirable neighborhoods to live and relax in.

The Rich History of Coronado

Today coronado is one of the most desirable places to live in the United States, but in the late 1800s the was little happening on the island. Recognizing its natural beauty several investors founded successful resorts that saw great popularity. The most famous is the Hotel de Coronado which still stands today. This hotel was masterminded by John D. Spreckles. Spreckles is also responsible for breathing life into San Diego through the construction of streetcars and rail systems.

Coronado Today

The current population of Coronado is more than 2,400. Parents of coronado send their children to Silver Strand Elementary, Village Elementary, Coronado High School and Coronado Middle School. The major employer on the island is, of course, the US Navy with between 5 and 10 thousand employees. There are many opportunities for employment in the tourism industry as well. Coronado tops many local lists of attractions as well as national ones. Many of Coronado’s permanent residents revel in the same natural beauty which attracts so many visitors. Locals also find entertainment in one of the several local playhouses such as the Coronado Playhouse.

Dining out is also something that residents of Coronado enjoy. Visitors too can take part in enjoying inspired menus at restaurants such as Miguelito’s, Nicky Rotten’s, and Sapori. If you’re in the mood for some superb Mexican food Miguelito’s is the place to go. Anything with Miguelito chile verde sauce is a good choice. On the other hand red-sauce, Italian style head to Sapori for a romantic and classy ambiance. Be prepared to see new dishes if you haven’t been for a while; this menu changes frequently. For some good old fashioned American food head to Nicky Rotten’s and grab a burger. Nicky’s is a great place to catch the game with some old friends, or to make some new ones!

For outdoor leisure try a walk along Coronado’s ocean facing shoreline. This is easily one of the best places to catch a sunset in San Diego. Bike paths along the eastern shore of the bay are also an excellent place to catch some fresh air and watch boats head in and out of port. Coronado boasts three beautiful golf courses offering year-round play: Coronado Municipal Golf Course, Sunset Park, and Sea N Air Golf Course. Because Sunset Park is located adjacent to the coast you can watch the sunset as you finish your round of golf!
